Project:     Case Modding 101: How to Install a Case Fan
  Author:     BigDaddy
  Date:     April 7th, 2002

Planning Stage:

The amount of time spent planning your case modification may exceed the amount of time it takes to implement the project. The case modder's motto is "Measure twice, cut once". Ensure the placement of the fan is not obstructed by other peripherals, or the case itself. When installing a case fan in a slide out panel, ensure the fan is far enough away from the edge of the chassis to slide the panel completely off.

Our top blowhole will be installed in the exact centre of the top panel. As you can see, there isn't a lot of room between the CDROM and the power supply. Accurate measuring becomes crucial.

Measuring the panel's length and width, mark off the centre point on the panel. In my case, the fan's axis was 8½" from the rear of the case. The case itself is 7½" wide, placing the center at 3¾". Place the centre of the fan grill on the centre point of the case. Mark the location of the four screw holes. Use a ruler or straight edge to ensure the screw holes are square to the edge of the case. If necessary, draw a reference line. At this point, you can drill out the screw holes with a 3/16" bit"

Screw all four screws in place to keep the grill secure. Run a pencil or marker along the inside edge of the outer-most ring on your fan grill. This will provide you with a cutting template. The inside edge of the fan grill is used to give you a little leeway for filing and cleaning up the hole afterward.
