Project:     CompuSmart LAN Party 2004 Report
  Author:     Hi-TEK
  Date:     May 24th, 2004

Introduction:

The Toronto gaming community was treated to our second biggest LAN venue of the year as CompuSmart's official LAN Party kicked off a fun filled 3-day weekend on May 7-9, 2004. The Toronto Games Headquarters would serve as the central location for this event run with the assistance of the Toronto Fun League. The premise behind this event was to go much bigger and bolder than the first TFL hosted party which MTB attended on March 2004. CompuSmart had arranged over $35,000 worth of prizes to be given away in a series of raffles, competitions and tournaments. MODTHEBOX was invited down to participate in the event along with a few other sponsors such as Atari, ATI, Bawls, Cooler Master, Corsair, Creative, Dare Foods, DFI, GB Micro, Intel, Lexmark, Linksys, Microsoft, OCZ, OptoRite Startech, UbiSoft and Z-Board.

The weekend started off with cold rainy wet weather as well as previous commitments that kept Mantis, Shennon and I from attending the first day. MTB would be attending the second day of the event on Saturday May 8th. We managed to make our way down to the Toronto Games facility at 9:00am in order to set up our booth and participate in the CompuSmart Media Challenge. Our goal for the day would be to hold modding demonstrations as well as work with Cooler Master as judges in the BYOC Case Modding Competition. MTB and Cooler Master would be handing three lucky winners a brand new Cooler Master Wave Master, Nikao Spider Mid-Tower and RaidMax Cobra Series Mid-Tower Gaming Case.

Upon entering the Toronto Games, the event was in full swing with a much larger crowd located in the BYOC area. A series of tables and chairs were stacked up on either side of the room with Ethernet cabling available for gamers to hook into the TFL network. Attendance in this area was very good with a number of gamers participating in BYOC contests or playing local games with friends. I noticed that Counter Strike, Far Cry, War Craft III and Unreal Tournament 2004 seemed to be the most popular games played in this area.

CompuSmart had a huge display booth at the event, offering gamers a chance to purchase computer components and modding gear. The CompuSmart booth was the only place where you could purchase individual and cases of Bawls for the event. In the center stage area, CompuSmart had set up a large prize area along with 5 demo PC's running the latest components from ATI, Cooler Master, Corsair, DFI and Intel. Behind the demo PC's was an impressive wall of prizes that would be handled out during the course of the event.

To start off Saturday's event, CompuSmart front man Chris Laframboise took center stage to welcome everyone to the Media Challenge Event. The Media Challenge Event would put the official event sponsors in a mini competition to claim the Toronto Games Media Cup.
