Design:

With all of the details finally organized I developed a new diagram for the wiring of the LCD to the printer cable, a circuit board layout, and a parts list.

(1) 40x2 LCD Module with LED Backlight LCD1025 BG Micro $5.95
(1) ICL-7660 Integrated Circuit Altex Electronics $2.50
(2) 10µF/16v Capacitors Altex Electronics $.20

(1) 10K Ohm potentiometer
I used 5 watt but anything over .25 should work

(1) Breadboard (prototyping board) to hold the circuits Altex Electronics $2.15
(1) Printer Cable Altex Electronics $2.95
(1) 4 pin power adapter
I scavenged one from an old case fan $0
(1) 3/64" Heat Shrink Tubing 1 foot length Altex Electronics $.99
100 Ohm Potentionmeter with on/off switch Altex Electronics $1.25

*Altex is a TX electronics store but any electronics store should carry the parts.

Here is a list of tools and supplies that will be required to complete this project:

  • Soldering iron and supplies
  • Wire cutters
  • Small phillips and flat screwdrivers
  • Voltmeter
  • Soldering skills
  • Some electrical knowledge
  • Patience
Before assembly, I should first state the obvious; a 40x2 LCD will not fit the front of a standard case. I am planning to mount the LCD into a side window on my case for a more dramatic effect.
