Introduction:
As computer enthusiasts, we spend a great deal of time in front of our computer systems and monitors. It is my belief that our computer
systems and office environments are a small reflection of who are as individuals. I won't go into classifications and specifics, but for
my own personal office I try my best to keep things nice and orderly. When I first set-up my office LAN, I was more concerned about
functionality than organization. Last summer, I decided to take things into my own hands when I came to the conclusion that the current
set-up needed some drastic changes and improvements.
Tools for the Job:
I wanted to do some changes and not break the bank in terms off updating my office. I was prepared to spend up to about $100-$150
for the entire job, so I came up with this quick shopping list.
- 2 x Tenex Foldable Basix Chairmats for Low Pile Carpets, 36" x 48", Standard Lip SKU#911900 Office Depot $15 ea.
- 2 x Cans of Premier Interior Acrylic Latex Paint (Flat) + Assorted Paint Brushes Canadian Tire $20 ea.
- 2 x PVC Pipe Tubes Home Depot $0.39 ea.
- 1 x Package of Marr UV Black cable ties Canadian Tire $4 ea.
- 3 x 8"x24" White Essentials Shelves SKU: #559849 Home Depot $3.49 ea.
- 2 x 70cm x 50cm Picture Frames from IKEA $15 ea.
- 2 x 70cm x 50cm movie posters $10 ea.

MTB Labs started like most places in a common home, filled with computers, cables, monitors and plenty of bare walls. White walls are
similar to beige cases in their stock form, nice to look at but definitely in need of change. The Hi-TEK PC-60 was in its second phase
of modding when this picture was first taken. One of the biggest problems I had with this set-up was the amount of hardware occupying
the top portion of my desk.

There is a secondary workstation located on the opposite wall which is used by Ms Hi-TEK on a daily
basis. After using the office for a few months with this set-up, we both realized that the office
required re-organization. Space was miniminal due to the positioning of our desks and the setup of 4
computers. By far the biggest eyesore was the amount of unbundled CAT-5 cabling running behind all the
systems.
