MODTHEBOX would like to thank Clare from Vantec for sending
the Vantec Nexus NXP 201 Fan Controller for review.
Introduction:
Back in December 2002, MTB looked at a new concept from Vantec, the Nexus Multi-Function Panel.
While the unit provided a stylish new look and some well need front-panel features like USB and
Firewire ports along with temperature monitoring, it did fall short in on area: the unit only adjusted
one fan. Since then, Vantec has released another product under the Nexus brand name, with their
NXP-201 Fan Controller. Boasting a complimentary style and look to the NXP-101, the NXP-201 is
designed to provide a full set of controls for multiple fans. In a fiercely competitive market of
rheobus design, the MTB Labs will investigate what Vantec brings to the table with their new
NXP-201 Fan Controller.
Specifications:
The Nexus NXP-201 Fan Controller is designed to manage fan control noise by adjusting the voltages
supplied to the connected fans. The unit is capable of managing power requirements of up to 18 Watts
per channel. The unit features a stylish design and is highlighted by backlit control knobs. Models
are available in both silver and black and can be installed in an available 5 ¼ inch drive bay. Here
are some features and specifications taken directly from Vantec’s site:

The unit ships in a standard blister pack for retail sale. The blue and green Vantec theme is ever
present, with the front panel of the fan controller completely visible. The rear packaging includes
a feature list, model information and a list of contents. The fan controller comes in two colour
schemes, either silver or black, and is designed to be installed in any free 5 ¼ inch drive bay.
With the fierce competition in the fan controller market, I was curious to see what Vantec could
bring to the table.

Included in the packaging is the pre-assembled fan controller, four mounting screws, two 3-pin extension
cables and two 3 to dual 4-pin power connectors. My initial impression of the unit was quite positive.
The graphics design on the product gives it a quality look that most users will appreciate. The Nexus
brand name is highlighted in the top left hand corner, with the Vantec logo adorning the right. Each
channel is individually labelled, and indicators relay the appropriate power setting from Lo to Hi.
This is a nice balance of aesthetics; not overly Spartan, but at the same time not overdone or with a
colour scheme that may not be appealing to some users.
The unit features four channels capable of handling up to 18 W each, which is more than enough for even
large power demanding fans like the Tornado. The unit can adjust the voltage range from 7 to 12 volts.
I would have preferred to have seen the full range of voltage present, since a 7 volt Tornado still
sounds significantly louder than one running at 4 volts (the lowest voltage I could get my Tornado to
remain spinning at). Most users will probably never drop their fans below 7 volts, but for users looking
for a full range of adjustments, this unit falls short.
