MODTHEBOX would like to thank Angela from Cremax USA Corporation
for sending the Cremax MB018 Multi Bay Back Plane Module for review.
Introduction:
Widespread broadband access has reached many communities and at the same time has allowed consumers to create
their own internal networks and SOHO businesses. One of the critical key components for any network is a
centralized server to handle to day to day duties of domain administration, password authentication, file and
print sharing as well as external services such as Internet, web, database and FTP. One of the most important
decisions regarding the creation of an internal network is the selection of server components and storage
solution options. A server that operates 24/7 requires excellent cooling options coupled with file storage
expandability for future network upgrades. A strong storage solution should offer reliability; fallback
benefits and fail safe options for maintenance. Today in MTB Labs, we will be evaluating the Cremax MB018 Multi
Bay Back Plane Module, an all-in-one SCSI based storage solution for small and medium sized networks.
Specifications:
The MB018 is one of many specialized multi bay black plane storage solutions offered by the Cremax USA Corporation.
Two different drive storage formats are supported (IDE and SCSI) as well as options for single or multiple drive
configurations. Here are some specifications taken directly from the manufacturer’s website:

The MB018 Multi Bay Back Plane Module arrived in a small double-walled corrugated cardboard box. The exterior

The MB018 Multi Bay Back Plane Module includes some additional accessories which included the following:
- 2 x Icydock miniature keys
- 2 x Icydock security keys
- 16 x 6-32 Flat Head screws
- 12 x 6-32 Truss Head screws
- 1 x Installaton Guide
Two reference sheets are also included in the package, where the first is a summarized list of the feature
set and the second is an Express Installation Guide. The Express Installation Guide covers the package
contents, display indicators, failure indicators, Backplane view and provides a 5 step procedure for mounting
SCSI drives inside the unit. After reviewing the reference sheets, I found the information somewhat lacking
in terms of providing more detailed information on the configuration options as well as setting the SCSI
ID dip switches. Configuration of the MB018 Multi Bay Back Plane Module must be completed first before this
unit is usable. Most storage configurations and options will be different, depending on the user and the
type of environment.
