MODTHEBOX would like to thank Cyrus from Zalman Tech for sending the ZM-MFC1 Multi Fan Speed Controller for review.

Introduction:

When you think of Zalman, you think quiet. Silent power supplies, passive north bridge coolers, funky looking CPU coolers, and recently heat pipe video card coolers are an example of the company’s philosophy to have no fans where possible, and quiet fans where necessary. This philosophy is summed up in what they call their Computer Noise Prevention System, or CNPS, a term synonymous with Zalman. In a slight break from the ideology of the rest of the Zalman product line, they have introduced a 6-channel fan controller. Apparently Zalman has now decided that if you are going to have 6 or more fans running in your system, at least let us manage them for you. Today in the MTB Labs, we will look at Zalman’s foray into fan controllers as we test their new ZM-MFC1 Multi Fan Speed Controller.

Specifications:

The ZM-MFC1 is a universal DC fan controller integrating 6 channels capable of handling up to 7-watt loads per channel. Four channels are equipped with potentiometers for fine tune control, while the remaining two provide simple dual voltage fan operation. Here are the specifications taken directly from Zalman's website:

The Zalman ZM-MFC1 Multi Fan Speed Controller ships in a standard retail blister pack, which displays the front panel of the product. The product name and the CNPS logo are the only markings on the front packaging. The rear portion of the box provides a full feature list, key specifications, a component list, as well as an easy to follow installation diagram. The rear panel is perforated, allowing the installation manual to be detached and retained for future reference.

While early model rheobus or baybus units had a traditionally Spartan look to them, the trend as of late is to spice up the front panel with some graphics and company logos. The added designs may be welcome to some, others may prefer to have the unit conform to their individual case scheme. As such, Zalman includes a complete drilling template on the left side of the packaging to allow users to mount the product on case-specific drive bay covers instead of using the included acrylic panel. The product is neatly packed away with a grouping of power cables and four mounting screws.

My initial impression of the unit was extremely positive. Aesthetically, the controller is very nice, and should complement most case schemes. The front panel is a two-tone acrylic panel, with a translucent blue center framed in a black outline. Four control knobs and two 3-pole switches dominate the majority of the panel, while high-intensity LEDs are centered over each channel.

Unlike competing products, the Zalman unit does not have the PCB mounted flush against the drive cover. Instead, the acrylic panel is attached to the PCB using four screws of approximately 1 inch lengths, with small cylindrical spacers between the two. This provides the unit with an interesting look, since, once installed, the solder joints, traces and connections are slightly visible behind the panel.
