MODTHEBOX would like to thank Mike from PCToys
for sending the Power Maxx 520W Aluminum Power Supply for review.
Introduction:
PSU enclosures remain one of the more critical components that make up a complete computer system.
Professional system builders and DIY users are now designing more complex systems with larger power
requirements and cooling options. Intel and AMD have both adopted the approach of compiling system
hardware compatibility lists in order to simplify the process of integrating various system components
together. As the market continues to grow, there are several recognized manufacturers that have
established credible reputations for designing high quality power supply units with excellent warranty
options. Today in the MTB Labs, we will be evaluating the PCToys Power Maxx 520W Aluminum Power Supply,
a product that offers high performance and unique list of features.
Specifications:
The Power Maxx 520W Aluminum Power Supply is one of three different units available on the PCToys website.
The PM-520A is a higher end model that uses 520 watts by default. The other two models are the PM-470A

The PCToys Power Maxx 520W Aluminum Power Supply was shipped in a black coloured corrugated box with
manufacturer's logos and images printed on any of the sides. The back portion of the packaging includes
product specifications and industry regulation standards. The packaging inside the box was good and
consisted of the PSU itself, 20 page manual, power cable, universal connector, 6-32 mounting screws,
and all the PSU Molex connections bundled on the left hand side.

Out of the box, the PCToys Power Maxx 520W Aluminum Power Supply has an aesthetically pleasing design
enhanced by an exterior encased in a black anodized aluminum chassis. The black exterior is complimented
with chrome fan grills and screws. The highlight for this specific model is the inclusion of three
80mm ball bearing fans which are connected to a 3-postion switch for controlling fan speed levels. The
package also includes a 20 page reference manual, universal ATX adapter, mounting screws, power plug
and zip ties. The manual details product specifications, features and warranty information that is
valid for 3 years. The PCToys Power Maxx 520W Aluminum Power Supply includes some unique built-in
features, which include over current protection, over circuit protection and short circuit protection.
These features are designed to safe guard any components that are attached to this unit and is
comparable to surge protection found on most standard power bar strips.

The rear portion of the PCToys Power Maxx 520W Aluminum Power Supply has all the standard features
found on most PSU units with some new enhancements. There are two central 80mm dual ball bearing fans
which have been postioned as front and rear exhausts to circulate all the hot air from inside the aluminum
chassis. An additional slim profile 80mm fan has also been included as a top exhaust fan which again
assists with air circulation and cooling. Each fan is controlled by a mini 3-position switch which
allows you to toggle the noise levels for each fan to make this unit practically silent in its operation.
While the switch is an excellent solution for fan control, I did note that none of the fans has any
RPM leads for those individuals who like to monitor RPM fan speed using application software like
Motherboard Monitor. Additional standard features also include one two postion rocker switch (ON/OFF),
dual AC plug connectors and a 115v/230v switch. The second AC plug is a god send for anyone who
wishes to power any AC peripheral device inside or outside their case. One ideal application for this
second AC plug would be to power a pump in a water cooling system without the requirement of installing
a solid state relay.
