Introduction:
In a quest for conserving desktop space, consumers have started re-defining a long standing trend of
migrating away from conventional bulky CRT based monitors. The need for small computer components has
been fueled by the popularity of new SFF (Small Form Factor) PC's. Part of the reason why conventional
CRT's are still widely used is the low cost factor and affordability. It has only been in the last few
years that analog and digital based LCD monitors have reduced in price and gained wide acceptance.
Samsung Electronics is one of the top-ten electronics manufacturers in the world and an acknowledged
leader in the digital convergence revolution. Since its inception in 1969, Samsung has successfully
transitioned from an analog driven product line to a cutting-edge and award-winning digital innovator
that is currently the world's number one manufacturer of CDMA cell phones, LCD and CRT monitors, DRAM
memory chips and microwave ovens. Today in the MTB Labs, we will be evaluting the SyncMaster 171N
LCD Monitor, a mid-range LCD that offers sleek looks and an abundance of features.
Specifications:
The 171N TFT-LCD Monitor is one of many available LCD based monitors available from Samsung Canada. This
product is part of the popular SyncMaster series and incorporates a narrow bezel measuring just 0.5

The Samsung SyncMaster 171N TFT-LCD Monitor ships in a double wall cardboard box with a plastic carry-on
handle positioned on the top. A product shot is showcased on the top and side panels, along with a
complete list of specifications and features. Inside the package the SyncMaster 171N was packed
between two formed pieces of polystyrene and enclosed in a sealed protective plastic bag.

The SyncMaster 171N TFT-LCD Monitor also includes a smaller plastic bag which contains an assortment
of items. The included CD contains the TFT-LCD monitor user guide, installation drivers and a software
application called Natural Colour. The Natural Colour application software allows you to manual
adjust display optimization, colour adjustment and colour preference settings all from your
desktop. An eight page user guide covers the driver installation for different O/S platforms
ranging from all flavours of Windows to Linux. A secondary manual covers the hardware installation and
recommended safety procedures.
Out of the box, the Samsung SyncMaster 171N TFT-LCD monitor looks aesthetically pleasing, combining
silver and black highlights for the entire unit. Samsung Canada is marketing this particular
unit as part of their mid-range line of consumer TFT-LCD monitors. The SyncMaster 171N measures
approximately 14.5" (W) x 14.5" (H) x 7.5" (D) and has a maximum resolution of 1280 x 1024.
The total viewable image size of the LCD measures 17 inches with a pixel pitch of 0.264mm.
