SilverStone Technology

Introduction:

Due to the nature of personal PC's and industry standards, there are many components located inside a computer that do not evolve drastically. The most important and often overlooked is typically the PSU or Power Supply. The power supply is one of the key items inside a computer and at the same time can be the most limiting. Many computer modifications are thwarted due to lack of available current from an under powered PSU. SilverStone Technology based out of Ontario, California is relative newcomer to the consumer computer market specializing in unique ID and mechanical design for all kinds of aluminum alloy products. The company has recently released a series of products based on PC cases, Medical Appliances, Power Supplies and other accessories. Today in the MTB Labs, we will be evaluating the new SilverStone SST-ST360 Power Supply. A product that features a 120mm fan as a high efficiency power solution.

The SST-ST360 Power Supply ships in a silver/gunmetal grey cardboard container with the SilverStone Technology logos located on all the sides along with the model and serial numbers of all the other units. This typical design means that the same packaging can be universally used with all their existing power supply models.

Most manufacturers are not concerned with a product's paint finish; however the SilverStone SST-ST360 Power Supply is a polished dark gunmetal grey colour, different from the other power supply units, which are usually made from tin steel. On the bottom of the PSU, a 120mm fan is positioned over the location where the CPU would normally reside. The benefit of the 120mm fan position allows it to draw away hot air from the CPU, expelling it out the rear of the case. SilverStone Technology has also kept the general colour scheme flowing by using a black wire fan grill, four black screws to secure both the fan and unit together.

The rear of the PSU, which would normally be seen from the rear of the computer case, is completely stamped with small ventilation holes, presumably to lessen airflow restriction. On the lower left (upper right when mounted) of the rear is the AC inlet plug, which connects the PC to the wall outlet, a simple ON/OFF switch and a 115v/230v slide switch, selectable depending on location and electrical service provided. One item that I noticed was missing was a secondary AC plug. Secondary AC plugs have started to become default options on most high-end PSU units since many consumers use it to power secondary devices such as monitors or water cooling equipment.
