Out of the box, the Samsung SyncMaster 173B TFT-LCD monitor looks aesthetically pleasing, combining silver and black highlights for the entire unit. Samsung Canada is marketing this particular unit as part of their mid-range line of consumer TFT-LCD monitors. The SyncMaster 173B measures approximately 15.0" (W) x 17.1" (H) x 7.0" (D) and has a maximum resolution of 1280 x 1024. The total viewable image size of the LCD measures 17 inches with a pixel pitch of 0.264mm. For consumers worried about monitor height adjustment, the 173B has a re-tractable base that can be raised or lowered 2-3 feet above the desktop level.

At the hilt of the Samsung SyncMaster 173B TFT-LCD Monitor is a black metal bezel which offers a small opening for routing cables and keeping cable management to a minimum. The black bezel is very well constructed and should keep this unit stationary when placed on any flat surface. The rear portion of the 173B is very standard and only offers one single power connector and a 15-pin D-sub VGA connector. Consumers looking for DVI (Digital Visual Interface), S-Video or Composite support will be disappointed that it is not included in this mid-range model. The lack of features again re-enforces that this particular product is suited only for an office environment.

One of the highlights of the SyncMaster 173B TFT-LCD Monitor is the ability to pivot and rotate this monitor into different positions. The viewable portion of the LCD is connected to an adjustable arch which allows consumers to tilt the position of the monitor -5°/+30° degrees. The base of the monitor itself can pivot approximately 90° degrees which allow consumers to switch from standard portrait viewing to full landscape mode. The landscape mode is perfect for reading e-mails and viewing the entire body of a website. This will be discussed more in detail with the installation of the Pivot Pro software.
