MODTHEBOX would like to thank Matt from SilenX Corporation for sending the SilenX 400w 14 dBA Power Supply for review.

SilenX Corporation

Introduction:

Computer enthusiasts are finding that with new processors as well as with overclocking not only is heat an issue but so is the associated fan noise. Installing more fans will increase the cooling potential of a case but at the same time will also increase the noise level. To combat this many manufacturers have marketed quieter fans and devices to introduce silent cooling performance. The same characteristic applies to power supplies where the challenge is to offer reliable power and at the same time lower the noise level. SilenX based out of Cerritos, California is a relative new player to the consumer computer market. The company specializes in the creation and distribution of PC based products designed for performance and silent application. Today in the MTB Lab, we will be evaluating one of the flagship products from the SilenX product line, the SilenX 400w 14 dBA Power Supply.

Specifications:

The SilenX 400w 14 dBA Power Supply is one of several different units available on the SilenX website. The goal of this product line is to introduce reliable performance balanced with silent operation. Each SilenX Power supply is equipped with a cooling fan rated at less than <14 dBA. Here are some specifications taken directly from the SilenX website:

The SilenX power supply came without an external box and was packaged in a sealed plastic bag; this was attributed to this unit being a review product. My first impressions were very comforting as this power supply weighed a ton. I’m a firm believer in the adage that "the heavier the power supply, the better the quality". This is because superior electronic components are generally heavier then there cheaper counterparts.

The contents included in the review package was the power supply unit itself, a one page reference sheet and a power cord. During my initial evaluation I noted that this particular unit is covered by a 1 year warranty by the manufacturer. The SilenX 400w 14 dBA Power Supply is a product of a different nature and does not come include any frills or fancy aethetics like UV-reactive fans and connectors, loom, sleeving, an acrylic top nor a paint job. Apart from the SilenX name on the top of the power supply there would be no way of telling it apart from a generic one.
