Introduction:

The pursuit of conserving desktop space has forced many consumers to look for alternatives when assembling their own personal computer systems. The popularity of Small Form Factor systems has driven a demand for components that not only provide the same level of functionality as full desktop systems but also take up less space in cramped office environments. The Samsung SyncMaster 172X TFT-LCD Monitor ships in a double wall cardboard box with a plastic carry-on handle positioned on the top. A product shot is showcased on the top and side panels, along with a complete list of specifications and features. Inside the package the SyncMaster 172X was packed between two formed pieces of polystyrene and enclosed in a sealed protective plastic bag.

The SyncMaster 172X TFT-LCD Monitor also includes a smaller plastic bag which contains an assortment of items. The included CD contains the TFT-LCD monitor user guide, installation drivers and a brand new software application called Magic Tune. In the past, Samsung has been known to bundle all their LCD-TFT based packages with an application called Natural Colour. Magic Tune like Natural Colour allows you to manual adjust display optimization, colour adjustment and colour preference settings all from your desktop. This software has been designed to work specifically with LCD-TFT based monitors which use Samsung's new Magic Bright feature. An eight page user guide covers the driver installation for different O/S platforms ranging from all flavours of Windows to Linux. A secondary manual covers the hardware installation and recommended safety procedures.

The Samsung SyncMaster 172X TFT-LCD Monitor is bundled one standard 15-pin D-sub VGA cable and a power adapter. After examining the specifications for this monitor, I noticed that missing from the package was an additional power cable for the power adapter as well as a DVI cable. Both cables should be relatively easy to replace and I'm pretty sure that this was an oversight for the review package that I was sent. As an alternative, consumers interested in wall mounting this unit will be happy to know that Samsung has included a VESA mounting bracket along with an assortment of mounting screws.
