The base of the DP-102 Deep Impact Heatsink features a machined finish that is very poor. Most overclockers will want to lap the base in order to improve the contact area and performance. The center of the base is composed of copper that is the base of the superconductive core. Surrounding the copper center is a steel plate containing either the AMD or P4 mounting brackets. The AMD and P4 mounting brackets are secured and removed via four screws.

Due to the sheer size and weight of the heatsink, I had concerns about the 6-lug tool-less mounting on the AMD solution. I decided to run some stress tests to see the effect on the socket. I used an Epox motherboard that had perished during an previous experiment gone wrong. The test simply consisted of mounting the heatsink, and seeing what kind shocks the socket area could take. The socket was completely ripped off when the motherboard was placed in a vertical position was given a 1/8th inch drop. I know this is not a lab experiment, but it does provide a cautionary warning that removal of the heatsink is required for any kind of transportation.

Four aluminum mounting arms are used to mount either a single or two fans on the heatsink. Since no fans were included with the heatsink I had to salvage two 80mm LED fans. The AeroCool DP-102 Deep Impact Heatsink offers support for 70mm fans natively and 80mm fans by installing the included 80mm adapters.
