The battle lines have been drawn in the video card industry with two key players vying for top spot in the consumer market. ATI and NVIDIA have solidified their reputations as premier video chipset manufacturers offering a wealth of products and development to enhance the gaming landscape. In order to meet the needs of a high-end gaming platform, Microsoft's DirectX9 extension continues to push envelope by providing a core technology that drives high-speed multimedia and games on the PC. Albatron Technology based out of Tapei, Taiwan is a manufacturer and distributor of high technology products such as leading edge motherboards, monitors and video cards. The company is a key channel partner for NVIDIA developing a video card product line based on the NVIDIA FX reference design. Today in the MTB Labs, we will be evaluating the new Albatron Gigi FX5900XTV 128MB Video Card, a product developed for high-end gaming applications.


The Albatron FX5900XTV is a high-end video card that incorporates NVIDIA’s FX5900 PCB reference design offering 128MB of memory and supports for AGP8x. Special features include DirectX and OpenGL support as well as DVI, TV Out and Video-In/Video-Out. Here are some specifications taken directly from the Albatron website:

The Gigi FX5900XTV 128MB Video Card ships in dark coloured retail packaging with the Albatron Logo located across the front. On the top of the packaging is a decorative image along with the product series number. On the rear of the packaging is a detailed list of product specifications, resolution rates and features. Upon opening the packaging, the Gigi FX5900XTV 128MB Video Card is surrounded in protective plastic held in place by a white cardboard insert.

The included 69 page User Manual is clearly printed in two languages and outlines several aspects of the video card including system requirements, high resolution graphic modes, product features, installation and troubleshooting. Overall documentation I found to be informative and helpful providing enough information to get the product installed and running in less than 30 minutes. The software bundle included with the product was a little bit disappointing offering old titles such as Duke Nukem MP and Max Payne. PowerDirector and PowerDVD round out the multimedia product offering by providing video editing and DVD playback support.
