Out of the box, Matrix Orbital MX412 USB LCD includes a mounting bracket that measures approximately 98.0mm (L) x 60.0mm (W) x 24.4mm (T) and is designed to fit conveniently into two 5.25" drive bays. The highlight for this specific product is a 20x4 display area and the inclusion of an integrated keypad on the left and right hand sides. The bracket and keys are protected by a hard coated black Lexan overlay and includes pre-drilled mounting holes for simple installation into a standard case. The front black Lexan bay display includes a series of 15 pre-programmed keys. On the bottom left and right hand sides are directional arrow keys and three function keys labeled F1, F2 and F3. These keys make up the bulk of the keypad options and correspond to specific letter outputs when pressed inside an application program. The advantage of this type of functionality allows you define these keys for specific tasks when pressed and opens up several different scenarios for everyday use.

When compared to the NK204-V 20x4 Serial LCD that I reviewed 2 years ago, the biggest improvement on the MX412 USB LCD is a newly adapted USB interface. The transition to a USB interface brings several benefits such as a wider compatibility range, more versatile interface when compared to serial and the lack for additional power from an unmodified floppy cable for basic operation. The provided USB cable measures 3 feet and is attached towards the top right of the PCB via a zip tie.

A closer look at the back of the MX412 USB LCD reveals an assortment of expandable options and an improvement in the overall PCB design. Towards the left side of the LCD are a set of six small white thermal probe headers that can be used with the bundled Dallas DS182S20 Temperature Probes. Located directly beside the thermal probe headers is a set of four high power fan headers capable of providing 1000mA at 12V which is more than generous for the majority of fans even ranging up to 120mm. Users should take note that in order to use the high power fan headers, additional power must be supplied to the unit via an unmodified floppy power connector to the 4 pin header present at the bottom of the PCB. Towards the right side of the LCD is the location for the RX/TX LED header pins. The RX/TX LED headers provide a visual indication of data communication over the Receive (RX) and Transmit (TX) lines. Consumers have the option of attaching LEDs to these headers which can be mounted externally in any desired position. Next to the RX/TX LED headers are a series of six header pins known as known as General Purpose Outputs. The GPO's can be programmed by using the right application software in order to control devices with voltages ranging 25mA @ +5V. In the center of the unit is the ribbon cable and connections for the keypad interface. The ribbon cable connects from the USB interface directly to the LCD unit itself. Finally, consumers have an alternative solution for attaching the LCD to any USB interface internally using a 5-pin header located next to the external USB connector.
