MODTHEBOX would like to thank Heather from Kingston Technology
for providing the Data Traveler Elite KUSBDTE/1GB USB Drive for review.
Introduction:
Portable USB based drives offer an all-inclusive solid state disk with a USB interface which is compatible
on a wide variety of platforms. Solid state drives work on a similar principle as hard drives and CD-ROM
drives, with the exception that instead of data being stored magnetically or optically, data is stored
electrically on a solid state semiconductor. The benefits of most solid state disks are lower power
requirements and virtually no susceptibility to vibration, shock or extreme temperature. Today in MTB
Labs, we will be evaluating the new Kingston Data Traveler Elite KUSBDTE/1GB USB Drive, a miniature
solid state drive which provides a plug and play solution to removable media.
Specifications:
The Kingston Data Traveler Elite KUSBDTE/1GB USB drive is the latest addition to the Kingston Data Traveler
product line with a storage capacity range from 256MB to 2GB models. The Kingston Data Traveler Elite is
a solid state memory device designed to interface via USB 1.1/2.0 ports. Both the PC and Mac operating
systems are supported with a simple plug and play approach. The Kingston Data Traveler Elite KUSBDTE/1GB
USB drive includes several newly adapted features such as 128-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES)
hardware based encryption and Travelsafe+ software. Here are some specifications taken directly from the

Out of the packaging my initial impressions of the Kingston Data Traveler Elite KUSBDTE/1GB USB Drive
were very positive. The Data Traveler Elite KUSBDTE/1GB USB Drive is currently the prestige product line
being offered from Kingston Technology and is targeted towards consumers who seek data security with maximum
transfer speed of up to 24 MB/sec Read and 14 MB/sec Write. With USB present on either platform, naturally
both the Windows and OS-X series of operating systems are supported for a variety of different computing
environments. A series of small finger grips run either side to assist in inserting and removing the unit
from the machine. Consumers will be pleased to know that the Kingston Data Traveler Elite KUSBDTE/1GB USB
Drive comes complete with a 5 year warranty and is capable of operating temperatures between 0 ad 60 degrees
Celsius. Those accustomed to using Compact Disk Media or floppy disks will be relived to know that the
average data retention time span on the Kingston Data Traveler Elite KUSBDTE/1GB USB Drive is approximately
10 years. The Kingston Data Traveler Elite KUSBDTE/1GB USB Drive takes on a stylish silver appearance
and follows similar design to rival USB drives. A simple cap protects the USB interface from harm and
can be easily removed when needed. One unfortunate drawback to this design is that the cap isn’t physically
attached to the drive itself allowing for a high risk of being lost. Unlike similar units, the cap is
unable to plug onto the back of the unit.
