The exterior of the Nexus Breeze 400 Mid-Tower Case is made of a durable plastic, fastened to a rigid steel frame. It’s easy to announce that this combination of steel/plastic is very similar to that of a Dell Dimension or Optiplex tower. This is true, however working with Dell PC’s professionally I can report that the Nexus Breeze is stronger, tougher, and built to a higher standard of design, engineering and craftsmanship. The case has a very solid and competent feel; this observation is enforced by the shear weight of the unit. The bottom of the case has Power and Reset buttons, as well as Power and HDD activity LED’s. The LED’s are orange in color. Below is a plastic sliding door that covers 1 x USB, 1 x FireWire, 1 x Headphone Jack, and 1 x Microphone Jack. I appreciate that the sliding door covers the plugs when they are not in use, but the thing is impossible to close once open. A flat headed screwdriver was required to pull the slider down every time. I hope this detail can be better engineered with future revisions of this case.

Gaining access to the case is a breeze (pun intended). The upper panel is your gateway to the inside of the case. Ejection of the upper panel is done by removing the thumbscrew located just above the power supply. With the top panel gone we discover two white handles between two rectangular pieces of foam insulation. The mechanics of raising the handles pries the Breeze’s side panels out of their locations. Standard case holes have been drilled and tapped at the top to fasten the panels with screws if you so desire.

With a panel removed we see one of the case’s key features which is 1/2 inch wave foam applied to the interior surface of the case. Nexus Canada reports that this material has similar properties to Nexus Damptek Foam Dampening material. It can withstand extreme temperatures, and is flame-resistant.The foam coats the inner flat surfaces of the case. The Nexus chassis is made of steel, and the outer shell is made of plastic. The plastic does not have any acoustic dampening properties, and is completely aesthetic.

This table outlines the Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) properties of the Nexus Breeze’s foam material. An NCR is a single number rating between .01 and 1 that describes the sound absorption properties of a material; the higher the number, the more absorptive the material.

The dominant acoustical frequency this foam can insulate from is between 1 KHz and 4 KHz. This frequency range would include spinning HDD’s and high RPM cooling fans. With that much dampening power, I am expecting some good things from this case.
