The Auto Mode feature functions very well. The Lower Bound temperature, when reached, will set the fan voltage to 6v (lowest). The Upper Bound Temperature, when reached, will set the fan voltage to 12v (highest). Any temperature values in between the Lower and Upper boundaries will ratio the voltage accordingly, making the fan speed changes smooth and pleasant.

Light mode:

This mode will allow you to adjust the voltage between 6v and 12v. Since the Theta employs Pulse Width Modulation to adjust voltages, I don’t recommend using this device to control your lights. While dimmer at lower settings, they flash erratically. If your case has any 2-pin fan connectors, this is the only mode you can use to adjust your fan speed. This is possible because the light mode will not set off any alarms if no RPM wire is sensed.

Background light only applies to LCD versions of the Theta series, however Celsius and Fahrenheit measures can be toggled and Channel Names can be renamed.

Observations:

The SoftTheta software uses 5,176K of memory according to Task Manager. There is no option to have it load with windows, so you must create a shortcut and add it to your Start -> Programs -> Startup folder.

Accidentally unplugging the USB cable to the Theta yielded the following results:

All fans turned off with the exception of fans controlled under Light Mode. This is alarming, as components that require constant active cooling are at risk of burning up if the cable gets staged and disconnected. Plugging the Theta back in brought the fans back up to 100%, and gradually returned them to their lower speed settings.

Starting up the PC brings the fans to full RPM during post. Only when the SoftTheta software is invoked do the fans spin at their software controlled settings. Temperature and Speed monitoring is done one at a time, depending on the channel you click. I would have preferred a display that lists all fan speeds and temperatures in a single window so one look at the software will let you know how all your devices are running.

Conclusion:

The potential Sumbeam brings with the Theta TP-101 Fan Controller is huge. The ability to control 8 fans independently using 8 thermal sensors is astounding. The AutoMode feature works like a champ, ensuring you can "set it and forget it", and the SoftTheta software is easy to use and is very intuitive. While the device gains high marks for doing what it was designed to do, I can’t ignore that the Theta’s "worst case scenario" programming is non existent. I am talking about a situation where the USB cable is accidentally unplugged, causing all Manual Mode and Auto Mode fans to stop spinning. Overall, I was pleased with the Theta TP-101 and award a final rating of 7.5 out of 10. I would recommend this unit as an excellent solution for controlling 8 fans and monitoring 8 sources of temperatures.
