Out of the box, my first impressions of the Samsung DVD-R120 DVD Recorder were positive. The overall design of the DVD-R120 is aesthetically pleasing to the eye and consists of a two piece silver coloured plastic housing. At first glace its hard to differentiate this unit from any typical DVD player that you'd purchase from a local retailer. The DVD-R120 measures approximately 430mm (W) x 59mm (H) x 245mm (D) and is very light weight at 2.9kg. Like a traditional DVD Player, the DVD-R120 supports a wide variety of formats which include Audio CD, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-Video, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, JPEG, MP3 and VCD. Formats not supported include LD, CD-G, CD-I, CDROM, DVD-ROM, DVD+R and DCD+RW. Towards the left of the unit is a small embedded Power switch.

In the center of the unit is the location for the built-in disc tray which is hidden behind a piece of smoke acrylic. Towards the right of the unit is the location for the LCD display unit and channel selection buttons. The buttons are located under the bottom portion of the LCD display and offer simple functions which include opening the disc tray, searching the title/chapter/track of any disc that is inserted, stopping disc playback, enabling progressive scan and starting any recording.

A hidden quick release tray under the Power button provides the first of several available connection ports for attaching any external video source. Two line-in composite ports exist for left and right audio as well as video. An additional DV-In port allows consumers to connect the DVD-R120 to any external digital equipment with a DV jack such as a camcorder. In order to deal with air circulation issues, the external shell of DVD-R120 DVD Recorder has been drilled with a series of ventilation holes.
