Once powered up, there is a short 3-5 second pause as the Samsung splash screen appears. Instant DVD information is available on the top left corner of the screen that provides current configuration settings for viewing an existing DVD. These default options are adjustable from the main set-up menu. Parents will be pleased to know that Samsung has incorporated Parental Control options built into the DVD-R120 that provides password protection and a rating level. There are up to 8 different rating levels supported which guarantees that young children and teenagers can only watch movies that their parents deem as suitable.

By pressing the menu button on the remote of the DVD-R120 brings up the On Screen Display. The colourful menu system for the DVD-R120 is well designed, easy to navigate and covers all the basic settings such as language selection, source toggling, audio setup, parental lock, channel tuning, subtitles, TV aspect ratio and DTS sound. Once in operation, Samsung DVD-R120 DVD Recorder works exactly like a regular set top DVD player providing the same level of functionality. The unit quickly loaded up the top level menu and provided quick access to the scene selection on the "The Longest Yard" DVD.

The Samsung DVD-R120 DVD Recorder also includes a built-in Auto Channel Memory option that allows consumers to attach a standard Antenna or Cable TV. This menu function will scan for active channels and populate the display with a full program listing that can be viewed at any time.
