The entire Landisk module consists of a mini V-Gear motherboard that is supported by a metal base plate, standoffs and plastic shielding. The mini V-Gear motherboard is the heart and soul of this NAS device and includes an embedded CPU and memory modules that control all the functionality of the ME-850. The motherboard includes a single IDE connector as well as a 4-pin Molex connector. On the opposite end is the location for the previously mentioned activity LED's.

Drive installation is fairly straightforward and can be completed in less than 10 minutes. The first step is to attach the bundled IDE cable and Molex connector to the back of the hard drive and slide it into place. Once the hard drive has been securely installed, 4 x 6-32 screws must be attached on the left and right hand sides of the unit to keep the drive stationary. One point to keep in mind is that consumers are required to manually set their hard drive preference (Master or Cable Select) prior to installation. The hard drive that I will be using in this review is a Maxtor 6L2R20 DiamondMax Plus 10 200GB hard drive. With the hard drive installation completed, the final step is to slide the Landisk module back into the enclosure and re-attach the rear plate.

Once the Bytecc ME-850 Landisk Enclosure has completely been assembled the next step is to proceed with configuring the WebControl Utility. Consumers must first power the Landisk and connect the enclosure to any free network port. The network attached to the Landisk must support DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) and assign the unit an IP address prior to use. One of the unique aspects of the Bytecc ME-850 Landisk Enclosure is that there are no required software drivers that need to be installed before using the unit. All that is required is a compatible web browser (i.e. Internet Explorer, Firefox or Opera). To log into the ME-850 Landisk simply type the following URL address into the browser: http://LANDISK. This will provide a login prompt that allows consumers to login with the default admin password.
