MODTHEBOX would like to thank SilverStone Technology for sending the SilverStone SG01 Sugo SFF Case for review.

SilverStone Technology

Introduction:

The Small Form Factor platform has revitalized the computer industry offering consumer's alternatives to designing and implementing newer computing platforms. One of the significant advantages to the SFF platform is the full implementation of a large scale system but at half the size. Shuttle was one of first manufacturers to market this concept with a full line of affordable miniaturized PC's. For consumers who prefer the DIY approach; SilverStone Technology has recently introduced a new line of SFF based mATX cases marketed under Sugo Series brand name. Today in the MTB Labs, we will be evaluating the new SilverStone SG01 Sugo SFF Case; a product designed as an all-in-one SFF solution.

Specifications:

The SilverStone SG01 Sugo SFF Case is one of two different units available on the SilverStone Technology website. Consumers have the option of selecting from two different colour formats available in black or silver. The SG01 Sugo SFF Case comes pre-assembled and only supports mATX motherboard formats. Here are some specifications taken directly from the SilverStone Technology website:

The SilverStone SG01 Sugo SFF Case arrived in boxed cardboard packaging with a black identification labeling on the sides. Inside the packaging the case was sealed in protected plastic with 2 pieces Polystyrene located on the left and right side of the unit.

The SilverStone SG01 Sugo SFF Case was bundled with an assortment of accessories which include a small bag of mounting screws and fold out installation manual. The fold out installation manual provides step by step assembly of the case including motherboard, fan mounts, and system components. My first impressions of the SilverStone SG01 Sugo SFF Case after removing the packaging were extremely positive. After evaluating most of the SilverStone product line for the past 2 years my expectations for the SG01 were high. If you have never owned a SilverStone case, one of their aesthetic approaches towards case design is the use of aluminum for the entire front bezel. The SG01 uses the same design elements of SilverStone's larger case models and is composed a custom aluminum/acrylic front panel with 1.5mm aluminum body.

The SG01 Sugo SFF Case carries a small footprint measuring 263 mm (W) x 210 mm (H) x 393 mm (D) with a weight of 3kg. The main focus for the SG01 Sugo SFF Case design is to provide a small form factor (SFF) enclosure without a proprietary motherboard or power supply requirement. For comparison, I placed the SG01 Sugo SFF Case next to Antec's popular Aria mATX Cube Case. Immediately you can see the size difference between two models where the SG01 is much taller and longer length wise. While the size difference may shock a few people and form a few opinions that the SG01 cannot be considered a true SFF, SilverStone has done this for a specific reason. The SG01 is considered a true DIY case where the consumer can design and implement computer parts of their own choosing. While most SFF cases are restricted to PSU units rated under 300 watts, the SG01 allows you to use a full size ATX power supply to meet the demands of power hungry components.
