SilverStone Technology

Introduction:

Mid-Tower and Server Tower case enclosures have been the standard for most PC computer users for a very long time. As technology improves, each year we witness changes in the components that power our systems. Manufacturers push the envelope to develop components that run faster and operate in optimal thermal conditions. Recently, there has been a push to migrate away from the ATX standard, which comprises of a large percentage of the current computer market. Consumers are now presented with new options for smaller computer enclosures supporting new formats such as mATX, Flex ATX, and ITX. The Shuttle Group was one of the first companies to capture the attention of the North American market with the introduction of a small format factor PC's offered for both AMD and Intel platforms. Now rival companies are jumping on the bandwagon with the introduction of DIY style SFF enclosures that allow consumers to mix and match parts for their own custom configuration. Last year SilverStone Technology introduced a new line of SFF based mATX cases marketed under Sugo Series brand name. Today in the MTB Labs, we will be evaluating the new SilverStone SG01 Evolution Sugo SFF Case; a revised product designed as an all-in-one SFF solution.

The SilverStone Evolution SG01 Sugo SFF Case arrived in boxed cardboard packaging with a black identification labeling on the sides. Inside the packaging the case was sealed in protected plastic with 2 pieces Polystyrene located on the left and right side of the unit.

The SilverStone SG01 Evolution SG01 Sugo SFF Case was bundled with an assortment of accessories which include a small bag of mounting screws and fold out installation manual. The fold out installation manual provides step by step assembly of the case including motherboard, fan mounts, and system components. My first impressions of the SilverStone SG01 Evolution Sugo SFF Case after removing the packaging were extremely positive. If you have never owned a SilverStone case, one of their aesthetic approaches towards case design is the use of aluminum for the entire front bezel. The SG01 Evolution uses the same design elements of SilverStone's larger Temjin case models and is composed a custom aluminum/acrylic front panel with 1.5mm aluminum body.

The SG01 Sugo SFF Case carries a small footprint measuring 263mm (W) x 216mm (H) x 393mm with a weight of 3kg. The main focus for the SG01 Sugo SFF Case design is to provide a small form factor (SFF) enclosure without a proprietary motherboard or power supply requirement. For comparison, I placed the revised SG01 Evolution Sugo SFF Case next original Sugo SFF Case that I had a chance to review last year. From the two enclosed pictures there is really nothing aesthetically different between the two cases. All the design elements that made the first SG01 successful have been incorporated into the SG01 Sugo Evolution. There are some fundamental changes done to the cooling system in order to allow this enclosure to cater to gaming enthusiasts who wish to run high-end hardware components that require good air circulation. The SG01 Sugo Evolution like the original SG01 is considered a true DIY case where the consumer can design and implement computer parts of their own choosing. While most SFF cases are restricted to PSU units rated fewer than 300 watts, the SG01 Evolution allows you to use a full size ATX power supply to meet the demands of power hungry components.
