Out of the box, the SilverStone Nitrogon NT06 CPU Cooler looks very impressive rivaling the heavy heatsink construction of Thermalright's SI-120 and XP-120 designs. The Nitrogon NT06 measures approximately 125.4mm (W) x 78mm (H) x 148mm (D) and weighs in at 570 grams. The weight limit for this product is within the CPU socket specifications imposed by AMD and Intel. As a safety precaution, SilverStone has included a rear mounting bracket to counter balance the weight of this product. The NT06 can be considered a hybrid heatsink which combines the cooling properties of both aluminum and copper. The top portion consists of a series of bonded aluminum fins that are encased in a black metal fan shroud. The fan shroud has 4 pre-drilled holes in order to accommodate the FM122 cooling fan.

Heat Pipe Technology is nothing new and has been used in a wide variety of fields ranging from aerospace to industrial applications. The technology provides some excellent benefits in terms of improving thermal transfer properties for passive cooling. In its basic form, heat pipes have a small amount of liquid in them, and an internal porous lining which can be likened to a wick. As heat is generated inside the tubing, the liquid is vaporized from the wick, and works its way towards a condenser. When the heat is extracted from the vapor, it condenses back into a liquid state, and works its way down the wick back to the evaporator. This continuous cycle transfers large quantities of heat with very low thermal gradients. The Nitrogon NT06 uses three heat pipes that are approximately 8mm in size and sandwiched between a copper base and black aluminum heatsink.

The bottom of the SilverStone Nitrogon NT06 CPU Cooler is machined smooth and has a nice mid-level finish which should assist with moving heat away from the CPU. Upon closer inspection, I did notice a few machine and nick marks along the outer edge and center of the copper base. Consumers concerned with added performance could lap or polish the copper base, but this is entirely optional.
