The base of the Ultra-90 K8 and the three heat pipes are constructed from copper that is nickel plated which has a nice smooth flat finish to it. The top portion of the heatsink sports the stamped Thermalright logo.

The Ultra-90 and Ultra-120 do not come with any fans and need to be purchased separately, giving the end user the option of using the cooling fan of their choice. Thermalright does recommend using a Panaflo medium speed fan. The fan is secured to the heatsink by way of a metal wire clip.

The wire clip is secured to the heatsink on the opposite side that the fan is to be mounted to. The clip will rest in the fans’ flange holes that are closest to the heatsink as opposed to going over the thickness of the fan to grab the top holes. This type of configuration is a double edged sword, as it allows different thicknesses of fans to be used, but at the same time some fans are solid plastic in between the mounting holes, not allowing the clip to engage anything.
