MODTHEBOX would like to thank May from I-Star USA for sending the I-Star TC-750PD2 750W PSU for review.

I-Star USA

Introduction:

As we all know or should know, power supplies are a key component of a computer system. Economical PSU's are the root of all things evil when it comes to system instability and crashes. Even if you are not an enthusiast, gamer, or hardcore overclocker, a top quality PSU will save you an inevitable trip to your local PC repair shop, which eventually that cheap PSU is going to warrant. Power supplies come in a wide variety of styles and performance levels, whether you are running a simple “web surfing” system, or an all out top of the line quad SLI gaming machine, or a server for a large company there is a quality PSU to suit your needs and power demands. I.T professionals need to rely heavily on top quality, trouble free components in order to manage a company’s server. Down time due to component failure can cause plenty of headaches and frustration, not to mention possible loss of revenue. Most retail type products are designed with the average home user in mind, and would have a much shorter lifespan in the commercial market. Today in the MTB Labs, we will be evaluating the TC-750PD2 a 750W “server class” PSU from I-Star.

Specifications:

As you may remember from my review of the I-Star Nitro AX computer case, I-Star is a company that designs and manufactures computer towers, server racks, and removable hard drive enclosures under their own name or as an O.E.M manufacturer for other companies. The PD2 high performance power supply series sets new standard in server and industrial power supply. The dedicated quad 12V rail design added extra system stability and lower thermal dissipation. 80plus high efficiency power supply saves on electric bills and less cooling requirement. PD2 is the ideal power supply for high-end gaming workstation, and server power supply. Here is a list of specifications taken from the I-Star USA website:

The I-Star TC-750PD2 comes in a plain brown heavy duty cardboard box. This box was shipped inside another larger outer box for extra protection, I am not positive if this is how all units would be shipped. Inside the box the power supply unit is protected by way of sponge type foam inserts.

The I-Star TC-750PD2 comes with a power cable, and a package of mounting screws. On the outside of the PSU is a sticker showing the power specifications and the usual warnings.

There is only one cooling fan mounted in this PSU, and we will touch on the reason later on. The I-Star TC-750PD2 sports a nice looking nickel finish; this is not as flashy as some units in the retail market today, but this is an “industrial” power supply that would be used for its substance qualities, and not flash factor.
