MODTHEBOX would like to thank Thomas from SteelSeries for sending the SteelPad QcK+ Mouse Pad for review.

SteelSeries

Introduction:

Gamers are always looking for that edge to make them a bit better than the next guy or girl. This may include the tweaking of the game configuration file, for optimum Internet settings, frame rate, and accurate mouse settings. Gamers have always known about the importance of accurate mice and mouse pads. Either one of these peripherals can be the difference between being a fragging machine or red paste on someone else’s screen. Today in the MTB labs we will be evaluating the new SteelPad QcK+ Mouse Pad.

The SteelSeries QcK+ Mouse Pad comes in a rectangular green and red cardboard retail box that has a small picture along with the key points of the mouse pad on the outside. Inside you will find the mouse pad, which is made from cloth and has a non slip surface on the backside.

Testing:

My initial impression for this style of mouse pad (not this particular pad itself), was negatively biased. The problem with foam type mouse pads is that dirt and sweat over time tend to stick to the mouse pad and (the same stuff we used to clean off our old roller balls before optical mice entered the market) which cannot be washed off, and requires the purchase of yet another mouse pad. I did not have a month or so of constant gaming to see if this is an issue with the SteelSeries QcK+. I will test the QCK+ with the following hardware:

  • Razer Copperhead 2000 D.P.I. gaming mouse
  • F.E.A.R
  • Func Industries 1030 gaming surface

Conclusion:

After a few hours of gaming spread out over a couple of days, I found the SteelSeries QcK+ to be a good mouse pad. It has a large area and a non slip backing that really kept in place even in the most intense battles. The mouse pad allowed smooth and accurate tracking with my Razer Copperhead mouse at all D.P.I and sensitivity settings. The fact the QcK+ is a soft mouse pad makes it easy to transport to LAN’s and such. One thing I did notice though with the pad is that if you stretch it, it does not return back to its original state very well. Despite my personal dislikes with these type of mouse pads, the QcK+ does live up to its claims, and is a worthwhile purchase for any gaming ethusiast out there. Overall, I'm awarding the SteelSeries QcK+ a final rating of 8 out of 10. If you have any questions regarding this review, be sure to visit the SteelSeries website for more information or discuss them in our forums.

Thumbs Up! Pros:
  • Excellent non slip backing
  • Large surface area
  • Smooth accurate tracking
  • Price

Thumbs Down! Cons:
  • Possibilities of dirt build up
  • May not last as long as a hard surface mouse
  • No mention of cleaning and care for instructions
