Scythe USA

Introduction:

PSU enclosures are one of several key components, which make up a complete computer system and can dictate overall system performance. When deployed into a HTPC or Home Theatre PC environment the configuration and selection process becomes quite difficult when dealing with the noise versus performance factor. One of the more important factors to consider when integrating system components is to evaluate power consumption requirements. Both AMD and Intel provide authorized lists in terms of recommended PSU units which help most consumers decide what type of unit and brand name would be best suited for their systems. Recently, there have been a few manufacturers who have deviated away from traditional PSU designs to offer a combination of great aesthetics and good cooling options. Scythe USA based out of Torrance, CA began its operation and business in November, 2002 as a distributor and manufacturer of PC parts and gaming devices for "DIY PC Experts!" The company has recently developed specialized products designed specifically for quiet computing environments. Today in the MTB Labs, we will be evaluating the Scythe Stealth Semi-Fanless Power Supply.

The Scythe Stealth Semi-Fanless Power Supply was shipped in a blue coloured corrugated box with manufacturer's logos and images printed on all of the sides. The back portion of the packaging includes product specifications and industry regulation standards. The packaging inside the box was good and consisted of the PSU itself and all the PSU Molex connections bundled on the right hand side.

The Stealth Semi-Fanless Power Supply does include a small assortment of accessories which includes a 20-pin to 24-pin ATX power adapter as well as a shielded power cord. Absent from the package was any sort of reference material or users guide. A trip to Scythe's North American and European corporate websites revealed very little information on this product.

Out of the box, the Scythe Stealth Semi-Fanless Power Supply has an aesthetically pleasing design. The exterior of the PSU has been encased in a blue anodized aluminum chassis. The thick aluminum chassis has small fins incorporated into the design, which allows this unit to act as a heatsink and provide additional cooling for the PSU. The unit measures approximately 150mm (W) × 160mm (D) × 85mm (H) and is slightly heavier than most steel based power supplies on the market. By default this unit includes a single 80mm cooling fan which is positioned on the front of the unit for optimal cooling. The left side of the Stealth includes a power rating guide which denotes that this particular unit is rated for 450w watts. This guide also provides detailed information on the rated amperage and voltage across each of the wired PSU lines. The rating specified on this particular review unit is as follows:
AC Input 200V/240V 6A/3A 60/50Hz
DC Output +3.3V +5V +12V1 +12V2 -12V +5sb Total
28A 35A 14A 18A 0.5A 2.0A 450W

The rear portion of the Scythe Stealth Semi-Fanless Power Supply has all the standard features found on most PSU units but incorporates a large black coloured aluminum heatsink for passive cooling and an 8-position rheostat knob which controls Scythe's Flexible Fan Control System (FFCS). The FFCS is a unique system that provides six different temperature configuration modes as well as the ability to adjust fan RPM levels. In Mode 1 fan operation is turned off while Mode 2 operates at 50°C with a fan speed ranging from 1100RPM - 1300RPM. In Mode 3 at 60°C fan operation ranges from 1150RPM - 1300RPM while Mode 4 operates at 70°C with fan speed at 1200RPM - 1300RPM. Finally, in Mode 5 at 80°C fan operation ranges from ~1300RPM while Mode 6 is configured for automatic fan speed adjustment from 850RPM - 1300RPM. Next to the rheostat knob is a LED that provides a visual confirmation that the fan is in operation.
