MODTHEBOX would like to thank Jack from NMediaPC for sending the ICECONE CPU Cooler for review.

NMediaPC

Introduction:

The cooling market encompasses every product imaginable to cool all the components inside a computer system. By far, cooling products designed specifically for CPU processors have been the most popular. In the past few months, we have witnessed an increase from a competitive level with the introduction of several new companies and HSF cooler designs. Established in 2004, NMediaPC is a new manufacturer to the North American market designing and developing media PC components to integrate various home audio and video functions as well as performance computing. The company has recently started to provide thermal solutions for the PC market with a series of cooler products marketed specifically for the HTPC or Home Theatre PC market. Today in the MTB Labs, we will be evaluating the new NMediaPC ICECONE, a mid to high-level performance copper cooler.

Specifications:

The ICECONE CPU Cooler is one of two different units available on the NMediaPC website. This first generation product is comprised of a solid copper base with bonded fins and integrated 100mm cooling fan. Here are some specifications taken directly from the NMediaPC website:

The ICECONE CPU Cooler arrived in orange and green coloured retail packaging with the NMediaPC logo located on front of the package. NMediaPC is marketing this product as a silent high performance cooling solution with a focus on an unorthodox heatsink design. Upon opening the package, the ICECONE is kept in place by a cardboard mount which also houses an assortment of bundled accessories.

Included in the package is small package of Stars white silicone thermal compound, four mounting buckles and components for both AMD and Intel platforms. By default the ICECONE is compatible with Intel P4 Socket 478, LGA775 and AMD Socket 754, 939, 940 and AM2. NMediaPC also includes a useful fold out manual that includes a set of reference diagrams and instructions for mounting the ICECONE on each supported platform.

Out of the packaging, the ICECONE CPU Cooler takes a page out of the famous Zalman flower design but builds upon the design characteristics by adding several distinct changes. The ICECONE uses a series of copper fins around the diameter of an NMedia branded 100mm ball bearing fan creating a larger heat dissipation area. The ICECONE CPU Cooler measures 112mm (L) x 112mm (H) x 65mm (W) and weights in at a whopping 713g. The weight of the cooler is clearly over the socket weight restrictions imposed by Intel and AMD, but to compensate NMediaPC has included two different mounting mechanisms to counter balance the extra weight. Attached to the ICECONE is a 3-pin fan header that plugs into any available header located on a motherboard.

Positioned in the center of the ICECONE design is an NMediaPC branded 100mm cooling fan. The 100mm cooling fan has a rated speed of 2600RPM ± 10% and can push 35.3-55.3 CFM with a noise level of 18-28dBA ± 10%. NMediaPC believes that this type of unique fan measurement provides the best balance between air flow, noise, fan speed and size. Both the copper fins and 100mm fan have been encased in a black plastic fan shroud that provides optimum cooling around the base of the heatsink.
