MODTHEBOX would like to thank May from I-Star USA for sending the S-9000 Server Tower Case for review.

I-Star USA

Introduction:

A Home Office LAN or SOHO environment is the key ingredient for consumers who have multiple computers inside the home. A centralized server can ease the burden of managing multiple workstations and simplify the process of sharing system resources. One of the most important decisions when building a server for your home is the type of enclosure used to handle system components. A large server enclosure should have enough expansion room to meet future upgrades as well as provide good stock cooling options. In the past at MTB we have explored server enclosures that have been targeted for the IT community as well as the home consumer market. Today in the MTB Labs, we will be evaluating the I-Star S-9000, an entry level server tower case designed for the North American market.

Specifications:

The S-9000 is the only consumer based server case offered by I-Star USA and comes complete with all the functionality found in more expensive models. The S-9000 Server Tower Case is certified to work with all Intel and AMD processors including extended ATX dual processor support. Here are some of the case specifications taken directly from the I-Star USA website:

The I-Star S-9000 Server Tower Case arrived in standard boxed carboard packaging with colourful identification labelling on the sides. Inside the packaging the case was sealed in protected plastic with 2 pieces Polystyrene located on the left and right side of the unit.

The S-9000 Server Tower Case was bundled with an assortment of accessories which include a small bag of mounting screws, motherboard stand-offs, 4 caster wheels, ATX I/O shield, PCI mounting tabs, 80mm cooling fan and device labels. No instructions or reference material was included in the package. My first impressions of the case after removing the packaging were extremely positive. Out of the box the case is very well constructed and built solid than most server cases of the same size. By far the S-9000 is the largest of any of the cases featured on MTB measuring approximately 8.7" (W) x 17.8" (D) x 26.8" (H). The case supports all Micro ATX, Full ATX and Extended ATX with a maximum motherboard size of 12" x 10". The entire exterior has been painted jet black with the main focus on the front bezel. The front bezel is flat and features a nice simplistic look that has been highlight with silver accents on the top portion of the case.

In the center of the S-9000 design is a small chrome lock that is embedded into the front bezel and uses a set of keys, which are included in the package. The lock is a welcome addition for a server environment since it is the ideal solution for added security and acts as a deterrent for chassis intrusion. The front door is well designed and is supported by two metal hinges that are positioned on the top and bottom portion of the front bezel. The door swings from right to left and allows full access to all the external drive bays. To aid with cooling, I-Star has added a mesh screen to the front door design which provides good air flow for any installed components.
