The SilverStone EB01 has feet that are similar in styling to most HTPC cases and home audio equipment, and with its simple connectivity options even the most novice users amongst us with have no difficulty hooking it up. As we take a closer look at the SilverStone EB01 internal parts, we can that there is not much to them, or is there?

As we can see this uses unit uses a Burr-Brown Corporation© digital to analog converter (DAC), as well as Burr-Brown FET-Input, Low Distortion Operational Amplifier, if you are not sure what I just said, in a nutshell, Burr-Brown components especially DAC’s are some of the best in the industry. The OPA604 is a FET-input operational amplifier designed for enhanced AC performance. Very low distortion, low noise and wide bandwidth provide superior performance in high quality audio and other applications requiring excellent dynamic performance. New circuit techniques and special laser trimming of dynamic circuit performance yield very low harmonic distortion. The result is an op amp with exceptional sound quality. The low-noise FET input of the OPA604 provides wide dynamic range, even with high source impedance. Offset voltage is laser-trimmed to minimize the need for interstage coupling capacitors.

The PCM2702 is a single chip digital-to-analog converter offering two D/A output channels and an integrated USB 1.0 compliant interface controller. The newly developed SpAct™ (Sampling Period Adaptive Controlled Tracking) system recovers a stable, low jitter clock for internal PLL and DAC operation from the USB interface audio data. The PCM2702 is based upon Burr-Brown’s Enhanced Multi-level Delta-Sigma Modulator, an 8x over sampling digital interpolation filter, and an analog output low-pass filter. The PCM2702 can accept a 48 kHz, 44.1 kHz and 32 kHz sampling rates, using either 16-bit stereo or monaural audio data. Digital attenuation and soft mute features are included, and are controlled via USB audio class request. Top marks to Silverstone for using top quality components where it counts the most.

Testing:

I will test the SilverStone EB01 using the following components:

  • Klipsch Pro Media 4 Point Speaker System
  • Logitech Z-5000 5.1 Speaker System
  • Winamp Media Player
  • Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe On Board Audio
  • Pioneer VSX-36TX Elite Series Amplifier
  • Paradigm Studio 40 Series Speakers
Once the unit was plugged in my Windows XP operating system recognized the device and installed the appropriate drivers. In my audio device manager properties I was even further impressed with the fact this shows up as Onkyo being the device manufacturer. There is a blue LED that illuminates when the SilverStone EB01 is powered, the same holds true when it is receiving an input signal. The amount of light emitted is fairly small, perfect for dim lit rooms.

Conclusion:

After spending a couple days playing various forms of music, I was impressed with the performance of the SilverStone EB01. I was able to connect my motherboard’s on board audio to one input port on both my home audio and my Logitech Z5500 systems while having the sound from the SilverStone EB01 connected to another allowing me to do quick A-B tests. Once I switched to the input connected with the SilverStone EB01 I instantly noticed, cleaner highs, a more vocal midrange, and the bass was slightly tighter. This just proves what most of us already know; that audio from a computer can be noisy and colored, especially when using on-board audio solutions. The SilverStone EB01 rectifies this problem, providing a cleaner tighter sound. If you tend to like your music cleaner, more accurate, and defined, I highly recommend adding the SilverStone EB01 to your existing setup for better audio listening enjoyment. Despite the fact the EB01 does not support multi-channel it does live up to it’s claims of cleaner, clearer sounding audio. Overall I was pleased with the SilverStone Ensemble EB01 and award MTB's Seal of Approval with a final rating of 9.5 out of 10. If you have any questions regarding this review, be sure to visit the SilverStone Technology website for more information or discuss them in our forums.
