The conversion process requires the external drive bay plate be switched from a mid-tower configuration to a desktop configuration. Consumers are also required to change the orientation of the plates located on the front bezel.

With the conversion now completed, it is time to take a closer look at what the Cooler Master CM Media 281 has to offer. The most striking feature is the aluminum fused front bezel that is accented with ABS plastic components. The top right portion of the front bezel includes an integrated Soundgraph iMON 16x2 VFD module with IR Receiver as well as several macro style keys used for controlling all multimedia audio functions. A hidden flip down compartment reveals a Power button, Reset button, two front mounted USB 2.0 ports, IEEE 1394 Firewire port, as well as an Audio and Headphone jack.

The center portion of the Cooler Master CM Media 281 includes another quick release door that shields the location for an external 3.5" drive bay. This addition is perfect for those consumers who use legacy floppy drives, mini-fan controllers or media card readers. Towards the top left portion of the case is the location for three external 5.25" drive bays. Only one 5.25" drive bay is exposed while the remainder is hidden with another flip down panel. The exposed 5.25" drive bay features a built-in spring loaded panel designed exclusively for an optical drive. While most optical drives currently on the market will work with this configuration, consumers who own slot loading based optical drives are out of luck.
