MODTHEBOX would like to thank Rob from MysteryByte Computers for sending the Marvel Comics™ Laser Sculpted Custom Fan Grills for review

MysteryByte Computers

Introduction:

Case modding started as an experiment in functionality; overclockers wanted to remove excess heat, so they cut holes in the side of their cases and installed additional fans to keep things cooler. Today’s case modder may still be looking at similar goals. The artistic side of case modding has taken on a life of its own, with some cases being modified strictly for looks, with no additional performance benefits. Themed cases are becoming common ground in case galleries all over the web, and at LAN parties worldwide. The battle for “one-upmanship” has some modders looking for more diverse and unique ways to make their case stand out from everyone else. Today in the MTB Labs, we take a look at a new product licensed by Marvel Comics™, with PCToys Laser Sculpted Custom Fan grills.

Specifications:

PCToys refers to these units as sculptures, as opposed to grills. They come in 80, 92 & 120mm models. The 1st edition models include Punisher™ and Spiderman™ grills, and as of this writing, the 2nd edition Wolverine™ grills have become available. These units are produced as a limited edition and are marketed as much as a collectors item as a modding product. Here are some key specifications of the product:

The units sent for review were the 1st edition Punisher™ and Spiderman™ 80 and 120mm fan grills. Each grill is encased in formed plastic with a cardboard backing. A small bubble in the top right hand corner of the packaging holds all the necessary hardware.

The rear of the package provides the installation instructions, as well as some potential options for use of the product. The suggested uses are as a coaster, a cooler grill or a case fan grill. Included in the packaging is the fan grill itself, a Plexiglas hole gasket, four Allen-head screws, four plastic standoffs, four fan-mount screws, four decorative nuts, and a Marvel Comics™ dog tag. The four Allen-head screws and nuts can be used to make the grill a decorative coaster. As well, if you wish to mount the grill on a case by installing it directly on a panel, the nuts act as a secure backing for the grill. A translucent Plexiglas hole gasket can double as a drilling template for fan screws and case holes, and matches the theme of the grill (the Spidey gasket is blue, while the Punisher™ gasket is black). Standard screws and standoffs allow for the majority of installations, a case fan install with a hole gasket and spacers to provide a little extra room for airflow.
