In Septerber 2002, MTB had the honour of being the first to exclusively review Computuning's first
generation PC-Rider Kit. The kit comes pre-assembled and
duplicates the popular "Knight-Rider" effect using a series of 8 LEDs, 12 Resistors, an Interface
Controller, a Counter and a Divider. The PC-Rider+ Kit improves upon the original design by implementing
10 new pre-programmed display sequences as well as additional LED support for detecting HD and LAN NIC
activity.

The PC-Rider+ has a total of 16 wires measuring approximately 30cm soldered directly onto a red PCB. A
series 2-pin male headers allows for configuration and easy hot swapping of LEDs. The PCB itself can
handle up 16 LEDs rated for 3.2 volts. The plan for the installation this unit was to accomodate the
bottom portion of the front bezel on the Scorpio TA-10BD Full-Tower Case. In order to add a some
multimedia capabilities to this project, I managed to locate a Logitech QuickCAM VC unit in a pile
of old equipment located in my office.

The QuickCAM VC is a miniature USB based web camera mesuring approximately 76mm (H) x 110mm (W) x 79mm
(D) and is capable of recording live video or picture images at a resolution of 352 x 288 pixels in 24
bit colours. The product has since been discontinued by Logitech with no support for Windows XP Home or
Professional. Recently, there have been a few hacked drivers released which has provided some brand new
use for this product. I seperated the camera PCB from the external plastic base in order to adjust the
focus on the lens and do some modding to the USB cable.
